Tracking and understanding national and regional key metrics
RTE provides national and regional key metrics (excluding Corsica) for the following:
- Consumption,
- Installed generation capacity (national electricity transmission system and electricity distribution networks combined)
- Wind generation,
- Solar generation,
- Greenhouse gas emissions linked to production (at country-level only)
- Cross-border trading between France and neighbouring countries (at country-level only),
- Cross-region physical flows in the RTE electricity system.
These metrics are available on both a national and regional basis, and include indicators such as “maximum regional consumption” and “average demand coverage by wind generation”, among others.
These benchmark figures are provided for the current and for the previous year, but you can also look up the historical maximums reached (since 1 January 2012 for national data and since 1 January 2013 for regional data).
Physical flows represent the movement of electrical power in the transmission system lines, between areas (this can be between regions, or between countries in the case of cross-border flows). The key metric is the balance of physical flows entering and leaving a region. A positive or negative balance indicates that the region is a net exporter or importer of electricity.
In addition, the maximum inflow reflects the fact that a region’s power generation is lower than its consumption, and it must therefore import electricity to meet its needs. Some regions are permanent exporters of electricity; in their case, the maximum inflow is always 0 MW because their balance of physical flows is never negative.
