Data overview

French power generation by energy source

Data on the French electricity production mix is published in real time in a live dashboard and is also available in historical dashboards. The data covers mainland France, excluding Corsica.

These dashboards display the following sources: nuclear, gas, coal, fuel oil, hydro, wind, solar and bioenergy (the latter also includes waste-to-energy production, which is partly non-renewable). This list is supplemented by two further categories: pumping operations, that is to say, energy extracted by PSH facilities (pumped storage hydro), and the balance of imports/exports with other countries.

In addition, a more detailed breakdown by technology is provided for certain sources:

  • Gas encompasses gas turbines (GT), cogeneration plants, combined cycle gas turbines (CCGT) and ‘other’ gas-fired assets (all remaining sources that are not included in the other three technologies).
  • Fuel-oil comprises combustion turbines (CT), cogeneration plants, and ‘other’ fuel-oil assets (all remaining sources that do not fall under the other two fuel oil technologies).
  • Hydro is broken down into run-of-river (river) and locks, lakes (reservoirs/dams) and PSH turbines (the turbines operating in pumped storage hydro plants).
  • Wind is divided into onshore and offshore wind farms.
  • Bioenergy encompasses biogas, solid biofuels (wood and other solid biofuels) and waste (household waste and recycled paper).

Further information on certain headings

‘Pumping’ and ‘PSH turbines’:

  • PSH (pumped storage hydro) plants are hydroelectric facilities that pump water from a tailpond up to a headpond (higher reservoir) during periods of low energy-demand. When electricity demand is higher, the water is released through a turbine to generate electricity.
  • The ‘PSH turbines’ heading corresponds to the power generated by the water discharged through the turbines.
  • The ‘Pumping’ heading shows the total energy consumption of the PSH plants.

‘Solar’:

  • The ‘Solar’ heading represents total solar photovoltaic generation (solar power fleets and scattered production units).

‘Imports’ and ‘Exports’:

  • The Imports or Exports heading shows the physical flows of electricity measured at interconnectors.

The live indicators on display are derived from RTE’s real-time remote measurements and continuous calculations.

The figures are updated twice after initial publication:

  • Over the following months, the indicators are consolidated using available metering data (‘consolidated data’ in the calendar).
  • In the course of the following year, the indicators are finalised based on all the metering data (‘final data’ in the calendar).
