Developing a sustainable grid

Operating the transmission system is a real-time occupation. Our job is to provide our customers with a round-the-clock power transmission service, while also adopting a long-term approach to the design and operation of tomorrow’s grid. Societal, environmental and economic considerations are increasingly becoming an integral part of our work. We work closely together with our stakeholders to enhance our performance, both now and in the future.

Supporting the energy transition

A central component of the electricity system, RTE supports the energy transition and uses it to boost the French economy. We do this by leveraging the diversity of the energy package on a local, national and European scale. We also foster electrical solidarity among the different regions, while seeking more flexible ways of managing demand. Our forward-looking publications and specialist talents provide a unique insight into the challenges facing tomorrow’s electricity system.

In order to throw light on our decisions relating to energy policy, we issue a report forecasting supply and demand over the next 15 years. We also publish a ten-year plan outlining grid development projects over the next ten years, etc.
In order to support new energy mix initiatives, we are involved in the preparation of renewable energy regional link-up plans.
In order to make the grid more flexible, we encourage our customers to postpone or refrain from using electricity at specific times (e.g. peaks in demand). These energy savings can then be redeemed on the energy market through the new NEBEF market mechanism.

A pivotal role in regional development

Regional economic vitality is heavily reliant on access to economical, safe and clean power. Through its wide range of activities, RTE creates numerous job opportunities throughout France. We are closely involved in efforts to promote diversity within our regions, by helping them to establish renewable energy link-up plans. We also bring new ideas to joint initiatives while fostering responsible procurement methods and partnerships with local small and medium-sized businesses.

Supporting regional vitality: The contracts we sign with our suppliers, amounting to 2 billion Euros a year, generate the equivalent of 12 300 employment opportunities.
Working together with the regions: In 2013, we spearheaded a landmark cooperative venture involving the construction of the Lille-Arras power line. We delivered an innovative and environmentally sound solution, from both a technical and esthetic viewpoint.

Optimised resource management and greater biodiversity

For RTE, sustainable development also entails reducing the effects of our activities on the environment, devising smarter methods to enhance biodiversity and leading by example in the use of energy.

Developing smart systems to support biodiversity: RTE devises novel solutions for converting the land occupied by power lines into environmentally friendly corridors.
Reducing energy consumption: We minimize energy losses across the transmission network. Find out more.
Controlling and reducing the effects on the environment: Our certification to ISO14001 was renewed in 2002. For example, we are taking measures to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, including SF6.

Succeeding together in a constantly changing world

The men and women making up the RTE workforce are the linchpins behind the high quality of service enjoyed by our customers. We encourage staff commitment while continuing to improve our work processes and expand on our talents.

Building up skills and facing new challenges: We have taken on 1200 workers over the period of 2013 to 2016.
Developing integrated and collaborative work processes: We have put in place a collaborative innovation lab known as J’Nov. This initiative is designed to implement ideas put forward by members of the workforce, in order to help the company achieve its priorities: customer services, technical and economic performance, sustainable development, corporate responsibility towards its workforce, good working conditions, etc.
Fostering commitment and outreach initiatives: Since 2006, RTE has been encouraging its workforce to take part in the Course du Cœur in support of organ donation.
To support the co-construction of research projects around biodiversity issues, we are members of the strategic board of the Fondation pour la Recherche sur la Biodiversité.
